(Dili) Mudansa- Legendary international boxing fighter, Senator Manny Pacquiao, blessed Timor-Leste with his visit and planning to promote boxing and put a business here in Timor-Leste, warmly received by President Ramos Horta and the people of Timor-Leste.
In his own words, Senator Pacquiao began by expressing his thanks after meeting with the President of Timor-Leste today (29/09/23): “First of all, I would like to thank President Ramos Horta for the warm welcome and extend my appreciation to all the staff and the media. This is my first time in Timor-Leste, and we are truly touched by your warm reception. I am thrilled to be here, experiencing your remarkable country, Timor-Leste, and I sincerely hope that this visit is just the beginning. I have plans to promote a boxing match here and establish a business.”
During a meeting with President Ramos Horta, the two leaders engaged in a meaningful exchange of experiences. Pacquiao shared experience in the past, while President Horta reflected on his own experiences in Manila. This dialogue underlines the power of sports diplomacy to foster connections and mutual understanding between nations.
Moreover, Pacquiao’s visit is not considered to ceremonial gestures. He expressed his intention to visit a local boxing gym, where he will give invaluable tips on techniques and training plans for aspiring boxers in Timor-Leste. This generous contribution showcases Pacquiao’s commitment to nurturing and developing local talent.
President Ramos Horta extended a gracious invitation to Senator Manny Pacquiao, suggesting two possible dates for his return: November 28 or May 20 next year. During this return visit, Pacquiao will be bestowed with the Order of Timor-Leste, an esteemed honor recognizing him as a remarkable fighter who represents the Filipino people with distinction. Senator Pacquiao graciously accepted the invitation and pledged to return with a delegation of Filipino boxers, further strengthening the bonds of friendship and sportsmanship between the Philippines and Timor-Leste.
Presidente Republika (PR) José Ramos Horta also emphasized the significance of Pacquiao’s visit. He stated, “Boxer Manny Pacquiao is a universally recognized figure, known not just in the Philippines but throughout the world, including Timor-Leste, where many young individuals admire him. His visit serves a dual purpose: it promotes sports, specifically boxing, in Timor-Leste, and it enhances the enduring relationship between the Philippines and Timor-Leste. Filipinos have always been supportive of our nation, and this visit underscores the strong Catholic bond that unites our two countries in the diverse landscape of Asia.”
