(Dili) Mudansa- The current Prime Minister, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, has announced that the government is committed to investing in the Greater Sunrise oil field in Timor-Leste to create job opportunities for the people of the country.
“The government is committed to bringing the Greater Sunrise oil to Timor-Leste’s southern coast,” stated the current Prime Minister after the inauguration at the Presidential Palace in Bairro-Pite on Saturday, July 1, 2023.
PM Xanana explained that this development plan will showcase to the world that Timor-Leste is a viable and economically feasible solution for the petroleum industry, and the development of the petroleum and gas sector in the southern coast is now a top priority.
Establishing a routine supply base and an oil refinery in the southern coastal region is seen as an essential investment to allow Timor-Leste to develop its own petroleum industry and create jobs for its citizens.
He also emphasized that, alongside this initiative, the government’s national priority is to finalize negotiations on the land and maritime borders with Indonesia, seeking solutions according to international law.
“I take this opportunity to declare that the new government will pay special attention to investment and welcome foreign companies that are willing to assist in the development of our country and create employment opportunities for our people,” he said.
Furthermore, the IX government will also focus on improving essential services, particularly in healthcare. They plan to enhance the technical capabilities of medical professionals to ensure better treatment for various illnesses.
In the education sector, the government acknowledges the challenges related to access to education, especially for vulnerable families. Therefore, they aim to ensure the quality of education at all levels by increasing the capacity of teachers.
