SEKOMS and KITL Agree to Revise Social Communications Law

(Díli) Government Palace- Government through the Secretary of State for Social Communications (SEKOMS) held a meeting with the Press Council of Timor-Leste (KITL), to discuss the Preliminary Revision of the Social Communications Law which will be held next week on August 14, 2025.

Secretary of State for Social Communications Expedito Loro Dias Ximenes said, the preliminary discussion of the revision of the law on social communications will continue to be discussed with the Press Council of Timor-Leste (KITL) next week, to review the substance of the law on social communications that was previously produced by members of the 2004 Constitutional Government.

“The social communication law that the first deputy of the Legislature of the government made, in 2014, has been eleven years old, advances technology, the public’s concern about the role of social communication, in the process of developing the state building process, needs to be improved” Ximenes to journalists after finishing the pre-eleminary discussion of the recent revision of the social communications law.

In the same place, President of the Press Council of Timor-Leste (KITL) António Maria da Costa Malik declared, the objective of the revision of the social communication law is how to see about the common interest or to ensure journalists in this country, while the discussion will be held again to reach the finalization of the revision of the social communication law.

“This law is to ensure journalists in our country, and this discussion is not only this but we will continue to discuss until we achieve its final objective,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Secretary of State for Social Communications proposed that both the Timor-Leste Press Council discuss the revision of the social communications law on August 14, 2025, in order to discuss the substance of the amendment to the law.
