Covalima, Debos, 23 March 2026 – The Press Council of Timor-Leste (CI), through the Director of the Media Development Analysis Directorate (DADM) Alberico Junior da Costa, held a training in Covalima Municipality on environmental journalism for 12 journalists from various media in Timor-Leste. The training aims to encourage citizens to love and protect the environment.
According to Director of Media Development Analysis Directorate (DADM) Alberico Junior da Costa, said that the training aims to train journalists’ skills through the materials given, so that in the future journalists can pay more attention to environmental issues.
“During this time we observed that many journalists have not focused on environmental journalism. Therefore, the Press Council has brought a strategy to increase the capacity of journalists in the area of environmental coverage, to encourage citizens to love and protect the environment,” said Director of Media Development Analysis Directorate, Alberico June da Costa, recently. it’s.
In this opportunity, the Director also said that journalists must report the facts correctly and listen to all parties. In cases such as the issue of marine pollution, journalists need to interview relevant sources to ensure fact verification.
He also stressed that information must be confirmed before publishing.
“Journalists must have objectivity and balance, and always verify information before publishing. Moreover, there is social responsibility and environmental sensitivity, because environmental issues can affect the lives of many people and nature,” he said.
On the other hand, participant representative from Dili Post media Ercia Freitas feels very proud to participate in the training on environmental journalism.
“I feel very proud to participate in this training because during this time my beat focuses on economic issues, security, health, women’s network, but in this opportunity I can train my knowledge more deeply about environmental issues” said Dili Post journalist Ercia Freitas.
He also stressed that the material he received will be implemented in his workplace, thus encouraging societies to love and protect the environment.
“The material that I received from the trainers for the future I will implement in my workplace, thus encouraging our society to love and protect the environment,” he said.
Related to this training, President of Covalima Municipal Authority Miguel Armada Cardoso stressed that his presence is to provide information to the media who come to Covalima Municipality to conduct their training in the area of environmental journalism.
“This training is important to train journalists especially for journalistic coverage of environmental issues and focus on protecting and loving the environment. Said PAM.
WFP also stressed that this training is connected with the future Suai Supply Base (SSB) project to improve logistics and production capacity in the municipality, including attention to sustainability and environmental protection.
