Journalist T-L Increases Knowledge Training on Women’s Rights to Land and Property

(Dili), 13 May 2026 – The Association of Journalists of Timor-Leste (AJTL) together with Oxfam organized training for journalists to increase capacity and increase knowledge about women’s rights to land and property in Timor-Leste.

In this training, trainer Tito Maia dos Reis explained that the security of women’s rights to land and property is very important for social development, economy and justice in the country. not only a place to live or farm, but also a source of livelihood, cultural identity and family heritage.

He also said, although the Constitution of the RDTL guarantees equality between women and men before the law, in reality many women will face difficulties to ensure their right to land. This situation occurs due to the influence of tradition, lack of legal documents and lack of information about laws that protect their rights.

“We see today many women do not have the right to land, because we are influenced by cultural tradition” said trainer Tito Maia dos Reis to journalists, 13/05/2026

On the other hand, Francisca Ximenes, journalist from Media One Timor, said that this training helps to increase her knowledge and increase her capacity in the area of ​​journalism, especially on women’s rights issues.

“The materials we learned in this training are important to help us journalists provide accurate and educational information to the community,” said Francisca.

This training is expected to contribute to journalists being able to provide more in-depth and sensitive coverage on the issue of equal rights and women’s access to land and property in Timor-Leste.

Meanwhile, the training was attended by 27 journalists from online media, print newspapers, conventional and television such as Media Democracy, TVE, Independente, SAP News TL, Media One Timor, Media Mudansa.
